“I was making that work at a time when I had a complicated relationship to language (and its meaning) as an element of the drawings I make. These shorthand drawings are essentially text drawings like Ed Ruscha, Kay Rosen, or Joseph Kosuth or Mel Bochner, etc., but the stenographic writing system allows me to give ethereal meaning to the loops, curves, dots, and slashes that come from the writing system – this is essentially a bridge between systematic abstraction and free bodily movement of abstract expressionism.”
